Here was delivering a speech at the Global Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. after his selection in a tough competition with other fellows from different big universities in USA.<\/p>\n

Currently at Cornell University as a Humphrey fellow, Jean Berchimas Siboniyo is leaning more about Agriculture and Rural Development to boost his work at AMEBE, a local NGO he founded.<\/p>\n

\u00abMy work is highly linked with my history. I am a son a rural woman who did not get a chance to go to higher education because, even if she was brilliant in class, she <\/span><\/span>was forced<\/span><\/span> to drop school by her mother (my grandma)<\/span><\/span> to help her family chores. My grandmother <\/span><\/span>was also influenced<\/span><\/span> by the common belief in the culture that \u201ca girl does not need to go far with education\u201d. I am also a witness of the consequences of poverty as I half-broke my spine at the age of 14 when I was obliged to carry a 110 pounds bag of cement for construction, trying to get school copybooks and school fees. What happened to my mama and I, is still a reality in my neighborhood. That is why I chose to change the status.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you allow me, let <\/span><\/span>us <\/span><\/span>think about these different questions<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span>What is <\/span><\/span>the main problem in your community that is impeding women from getting what they deserve?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
– <\/span>What public policies are already available to allow both girls and boys get good education?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
– <\/span>How is does an empowered women looks like in terms of access to her health and that of her offspring?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
– <\/span>How likely women are consulted in making decisions on the welfare of the <\/span><\/span>community?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
– <\/span>What are we, as leaders, helping women cope with poverty and decide for their own future and that of their offspring and the community?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Recognizing that I cannot solve all the problems in the community, <\/span><\/span>my mentors\u2019 team <\/span><\/span>composed \u00a0of<\/span><\/span> women, young and men have decided to focus on providing entrepreneurial education <\/span><\/span>through<\/span><\/span> trainings for economic resilience, social and community leadership.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

What about youths? In many lands, youths <\/span><\/span>are viewed<\/span><\/span> as a layer of population to blindly execute decisions made by the government and<\/span><\/span>\/or<\/span><\/span> older men.<\/span><\/span> However<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>think about the change social <\/span><\/span>media, mostly invented<\/span><\/span> by young people. <\/span><\/span>Think about yoursel<\/span><\/span>ves<\/span><\/span> when you began with what you are doing, back in 5 years and see where<\/span><\/span> you<\/span><\/span> are now.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our 5 years\u2019 experience working<\/span><\/span> with <\/span><\/span>women and youths <\/span><\/span>have brought to us<\/span><\/span> surprising <\/span><\/span>results<\/span><\/span>. Indeed, <\/span><\/span>we have taken<\/span><\/span> them<\/span><\/span>from <\/span><\/span>hopeless <\/span><\/span>individuals <\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span> social entrepreneurs and community leaders<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To be able to reach those results we had to apply servant leadership<\/span><\/span>. With this kind of leadership,<\/span><\/span> we<\/span><\/span> strive to <\/span><\/span>teach by example <\/span><\/span>by taking the lead in community services <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>let<\/span><\/span> them <\/span><\/span>witness truthfulness of the possibility of the problem solving by the community itself. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I hope that you all agree with me <\/span><\/span>that <\/span><\/span>Economic development is <\/span><\/span>a multi-and-interdisciplinary<\/span><\/span> process and a result of a combination of efforts in <\/span><\/span>different areas of life<\/span><\/span> as well cooperati<\/span><\/span>on between agents in communities both locally<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>international<\/span><\/span>ly<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, individualism is killing <\/span><\/span>us and our leadership dear leaders<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>One African saying states: <\/span><\/span>\u201cIf you want to fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together<\/span><\/span>\u201d. Therefore, <\/span><\/span>it\u2019s<\/span><\/span> our choice between going alone and lose <\/span><\/span>or<\/span><\/span><\/a> going together and win. <\/span><\/span>But<\/span><\/span> as for me, I see in each one of you, an image of a partner in the near future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now is the time to synergize, to combine our efforts and strategies for a greater impact in our communities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
