This Friday, June 10, 2022, the Ministry of Communication, Information , Technology and Media joined the world in celebrating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in Burundi, 2022 edition. For the year 2022, this day was celebrated under the theme: “Digital technologies at the service of the elderly and healthy aging“.

It is for this reason that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Solidarity has actively participated in these ceremonies, indicating that the Government of Burundi invests a lot in supporting the elderly in terms of social solidarity and financial support through various mechanisms of social protection.

In his speech, the assistant to the Minister in charge of Communication, Information Technology and Media reiterated that this day is traditionally celebrated on May 17 of each year, a date that marks the creation of the International Telecommunication Union, it was May 17, 1865. This day is an opportune moment for actors, operators and partners of the digital for a self-evaluation so that digital technologies are effective and contribute to the social development of the Burundian population in general and a happy aging for the elderly in particular.

As a reminder, this day was preceded by field visits to assist the elderly hospitalized and / or retired and the payment of health care bills without forgetting the social assistance in its various forms including the granting of food. This was the case at the Prince Regent Charles Hospital in Bujumbura, the St. Elizabeth’s Home for the Elderly in Rohero, St. Elizabeth’s Home for the Elderly in Gihanga and elsewhere. The assistant to the minister then invited all concerned stakeholders to implement strategies that meet the needs of the elderly and put them into practice throughout the year 2022.

This theme urges all stakeholders and operators in the telecommunications sector to combine their efforts to keep the elderly healthy, connected and independent physically, emotionally and financially.
