A significant donation granted to Burundi by the American government in support of the nutrition program in schools.

On Thursday, February 10 th , 2022, The Burundi First Lady and President of OPDAD-Burundi, Her Excellency Angeline Ndayishimiye, received in audience the American ambassador to Burundi, Melanie Higgins, in Gitega, in the locality of Kibimba. Among other points, the two authorities discussed the reinforcement of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

In this context, Ambassador Melanie announced that her country is ready to donate 25 million US dollars for a period of five years to support the program of food distribution in Burundian schools. This grant was promised in response to the request of OPDD-Burundi and other high dignitaries of the country, indicated the American ambassador.

The programme will be executed through the Mcgovern-Dole programme, and the first part of the grant is expected in September 2022.

As for the Burundi First Lady, she expressed her satisfaction with regard to this donation which will encourage the school children and thanked the American government for the support. Although some schools could not be part of the programme, the First Lady explained that the number of schools involved in this programme shall be increased in order to reach the maximun number of children in different provinces of the country.

After their meeting, Her Excellency Angeline Ndayishimiye, together with the Ambassador of the United States of America to Burundi, visited the Umugiraneza Clinic in the same locality of Kibimba, whose construction is at the final stage. Ambassador Melanie Higgins appreciated the works of the Burundi First Lady towards the population via the services delivered by this organization.
