European Union is ready to continue the dialogue with the Government of Burundi

The Government of the Republic of Burundi represented by H.E. Ambassador Albert SHINGIRO, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation and the European Union in Burundi represented by the Ambassador of the European Union, and the Ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union resident in Burundi, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and a mission of senior officials from the European institutions, continued their exchanges this Thursday May 19, 2022 as provided for in Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement between the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries on the one hand, and the European Union and its Member States on the other.

Wishing to consolidate in a lasting way the confidence regained following the lifting of measures against Burundi under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, the two parties have agreed to continue the dialogue in order to exploit all the prospects offered by this renewal of relations, from the point of view of cooperation as well as economic, trade and investment opportunities, and to facilitate the implementation of the reforms included in the Burundian government’s roadmap, particularly in the areas of good governance, justice and the rule of law, human rights, gender equality and the business climate.

This fourth meeting, at the invitation of the European side, took place in a constructive atmosphere. Between now and the next meeting, the two parties will continue their exchanges at the technical and sectoral levels.
