Mugongomanga: A common grave with more than 1500 corpses discovered

This Saturday, 26 February 2022, the National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation provisionally concluded the recently undertaken activities in Bujumbura province. For the last two weeks, the commission discovered 1852 corpses of the victims of 1972 atrocities.

1562 of the 1852 remains were discovered in Mugongomanaga commune in one common grave of more than 80 m of depth, 93 were discovered in Mutambu commune while 72 were discovered in Mukike commune and 125 in Isale commune. In this last commune, 8 corpses were discovered in Nyarukere area while 117 were found in the locality of Nyarumpongo.

You should remember these activities of identifying and deterring human remains from the 1972 atrocities are taking place in all provinces, with this Friday marking provisional closure of these activities in Ruyigi and Rutana provinces while the final closing is scheduled in April 2022.
