The President of the Republic, accompanied by the First Lady, H.E. Evariste Ndayishimiye arrived in the Tunisian capital on August 26, 2022 to participate in the eighth edition of TICAD, which is a platform for Africa-Japan cooperation launched in 1993 and of which Burundi is an active member. The Burundian Presidential Couple was warmly welcomed by the President of the Republic of Tunisia H.E. Kaïs Saïed.
Upon his arrival, the Head of State met briefly with his Tunisian counterpart H.E. Kaïs Saïed. The two Heads of State hope that this eighth edition will also be an opportunity to exchange and strengthen the solidarity between African countries.
On the morning of August 27, 2022, the delegation of Burundi led by the President of the Republic took part in the opening ceremonies and the work of the first day of the “TICAD8” co-organized at the Palais des Congrès in Tunis by the African Union to assess, reorient and strengthen the Africa-Japan relations.
This conference provides an ideal framework for an in-depth study of Africa’s transformation into a region of economic growth, the building of a resilient society and the consolidation of lasting peace and stability.
Indeed, African and Japanese political leaders stressed the urgency of rethinking traditional models of partnership and ensuring that resolutions taken are translated into concrete actions for the benefit of the people.
While acknowledging the important role that Japan has played in reducing some of the imbalances, the African Heads of State and Government called for a readjustment of priorities and a redefinition of approaches, “new mechanisms in the face of new challenges”, “building a new era together.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida indicated that his country wishes to grow at the same place as its partner countries and stressed that Africa, the continent of the future, must be the actor of its own development.
