President Ndayishimiye reminds diaspora of the value of their homeland

In Ngozi province which was chosen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to host the sixth edition of the Diaspora week, the opening ceremonies were enhanced by the presence of the President of the Republic, HE Evariste Ndayishimiye.

In his speech, the President praised the growing spirit of patriotism in the Diaspora. Those who were once considered Burundian refugees now consider themselves Burundians living and working abroad. He also explained the logic behind the theme of this diaspora week, which emphasizes the agricultural dimension of the national economy:« Diaspora, together for agricultural development and environmental protection ». He therefore invited the diaspora to “support the government of Burundi in its relentless fight against poverty”.

President Ndayishimiye did not fail to thank the diaspora for the various achievements. As for the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Albert Shingiro, he promised them support in their activities while reiterating that the government has put in place several opportunities and facilities for the smooth running of the diaspora projects.

The president of the Burundi Diaspora, Mr. Eric Niragira, expressed his gratitude to the President of Burundi and his collaborators for the support that the government does not cease to show to them. Some projects such as a legal framework that governs the diaspora and the creation of a bank of the diaspora are at a satisfactory stage. He indicated that the diaspora will spare no effort to contribute to the development of their country.

In closing, the President of the Republic gave advice to the participants especially the Diaspora, reminding them to always be conscious that they are Burundians, even if they live and work in other countries.
