Who is Going to Win Awards on Burundi’s Independence Day?
Tuvugane Celebrates Burundi’s 59th Year of Indepence By Giving Out Awards to Burundian-Americans Doing Impactful Work in Their Communities
On the 2nd through 4th of July, Tuvugane, an organization founded and led by Burundian-American youth, will host a three-day eventful celebration in honor of Burundi’s 59 years of independence from Belgium.

 

The celebration will take place in Louisville, Kentucky and will be attended by Burundians and friends of Burundians from various states across the United States and beyond. The leaders of Tuvugane believe the process of contributing towards the development of their mother country, Burundi, begins by empowering each other to reach their full potential.

They believe part of that process is to celebrate each other’s accomplishments whilst encouraging one another to continue serving their communities diligently.

As Tuvugane leaders strive to live up to the mission of their organization, they planned the three-day celebration as an opportunity for participants to network, socialize, and learn from one another. Additionally, the leaders recognized that 2020 and 2021 have been rough years for everyone due to the COVID-19 pandemic.They commend individuals and organizations that have pioneered in maneuvering the various challenges brought by the pandemic.

Thus, the weekend celebration will be topped off by an award ceremony to officially recognize the individuals and organizations that were nominated for their outstanding work done to better Burundians in the U.S. and Burundi during the pandemic years.

The awards to be given have been organized in the following categories:
Unsung Hero Award
Will be awarded to an individual that has positively influenced the Burundian community in the United States from behind the scenes with a positive attitude.

Humanitarian Award
Will be given to an individual or a group that has shown exemplary leadership in eradicating poverty and reducing suffering.
Creative Arts Award
Will be going to an individual in the visual and creative arts industries who has used their talent to create positive change and serve their community diligently.
Activist of the Year Award
Will be taken by an individual or organization that has actively campaigned for human rights, coexistence and is not shy to confront injustice.

Artist of the Year ward
Will be won by a Burundian-American artist who has represented Burundi well through their music and whose music exhibits excellence in composition and production.
Influencer of the Year ward
Will be awarded to an individual who has shown exemplary leadership by creating content that positively inspired, entertained, and informed the Burundian diaspora in the United States.

Fashion Designer of the Year Award
Will be given to a Burundian designer who has positively influenced the Burundian diaspora in the United States.
Business Brand of the Year Award
Will be going to a Burundian business brand that has positively influenced the Burundian diaspora in the United States.
Gospel Singer of the Year Award
Will be taken by a gospel singer or choir that has positively influenced the Burundian diaspora and whose music exhibits excellence in delivery and production.

Community Organization of the Year
Will be won by a Burundian community organization that has positively influenced the Burundian diaspora in the United States.

Additionally Tuvugane will be giving out two different prizes during the independence celebration: A roundtrip ticket to Burundi to be received by an individual who will be chosen by the attendees for Best Dress. A $1,500 scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding Burundian-American student currently attending a higher education institution.
