On behalf of the President of the Republic of Burundi, the Vice-President of the Republic H.E. Ir Prosper BAZOMBANZA has enhanced with his presence, this Monday, October 10, 2022 in Bujumbura, the opening ceremonies of the third edition of the National High Level Forum of Women Leaders, under the theme: “Health and nutrition of women, newborns, children and adolescents”.
One of the prominent personalities in this forum, the First Lady of Burundi, Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE, specified that the present forum is organized in order to give the opportunity to Burundian women leaders and those coming from the four corners of the world to exchange and reflect on the resilient and sustainable means and actions that can contribute to the improvement of the health and nutrition of the woman, the newborn, the child and the adolescent.
In his speech, the Vice-President of the Republic informed that Burundi is pleased with its political and security situation and the friendly links with other countries which have improved under the leadership of his Excellency Major General Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE, President of the Republic of Burundi. He reminded that the Government has already initiated strategies aiming at improving the nutrition of the Burundian population among others the policy of subsidizing free health care for children under 5 years and pregnant women since 2006.
Vice President BAZOMBANZA also specified that the Burundian Head of State has made agriculture a priority, which has contributed to the increase in agricultural production, and as a result we are noticing a significant decrease in acute malnutrition among children under 5, and he then thanked Her Excellency the First Lady of Burundi, through OPDD-Burundi, who has accepted to become the sponsor of the school feeding program and who has already implemented activities aimed at improving the nutrition of school children at the basic school level.
To close, the Vice President stressed that the Government of Burundi has already put in place policies aimed at improving the social welfare of women and youth, through the creation and financing of youth banks, women’s banks, agricultural bank and agricultural insurance, and finally closed his remarks by wishing for the outcome of this forum, for strategies and more commitments from all stakeholders to continue to provide more efforts to improve the health and nutrition of the Burundian population.
